Uses of literature review

A literature review is intended to:

  1. Provide background information about the subject
  2. Identify earlier study topics to avoid duplication and provide credit to other scientists.
  3. Identify inconsistencies: research gaps, past study disputes, and unanswered issues left by prior research.
  4. Determine the need for more study (justifying your research)
  5. Determine the link between works in light of their contribution to the subject and other works.
  6. Place your own research into the context of the current literature and argue why more research is required.
