Basic research

Basic research, also known as pure research or fundamental research, is a type of scientific research that aims to improve scientific theories in order to achieve a greater understanding and more accurate prediction of natural or other phenomena. Other names for basic research include pure research and fundamental research. Research that falls within the category of basic research also goes by the terms pure research and fundamental research.

¹⁾In contrast to basic research, applied research makes use of scientific concepts to develop technologies or procedures that may be utilized to interfere in and influence the occurrence of natural or other events. ²⁾The utilization of these technologies and methods can be done in order to exert influence over natural or other kinds of events. Fundamental research is often the driving force behind the technological achievements of applied science, despite the fact that it is sometimes driven by little more than basic curiosity. ³⁾In the process of coordinated research and development, the two objectives are typically pursued simultaneously in order to achieve the highest possible level of productivity.
