Book Description :

Stereochemistry: Basic Concepts and Applications is a three-chapter text that introduces the basic principles and concepts of stereochemistry, as well as its application to organic chemistry application. Chapter 1 describes first the stereochemistry of the ground state, specifically the configuration and conformation of organic compounds, as well as the most important methods for its investigation. This chapter also deals with the kinetics of conformational changes and provides an overview of the so-called “applied stereochemistry”. Chapter 2 focuses on the analysis of the internal motions of the molecules and of the corresponding activation energies. This chapter also examines the principles of intramolecular symmetry. Chapter 3 considers the stereochemical aspect of several enzymic processes and the stereoisomerism of monotonic polymers and inorganic complexes. This book will be of great value to organic chemists and organic chemistry graduate students.

Stereochemistry Conformation and Mechanism

Stereochemistry Conformation and Mechanism Book Author : P.S. Kalsi Publisher : New Age International Release : 2008-01-01 ISBN : 8122423566 Language : En

Book Description :

Stereochemistry has always occupied a central position and is pivotal to the practice of organic chemistry. A solid understanding of this subject is indeed critical to subsequent success in a science career. Stereochemistry is, therefore, a core constituent both at the undergraduate and postgraduate chemistry courses. This seventh edition is extensively revised and enlarged by adding new material to take account of recent developments and extensive amendments have been made to improve clarity. The key features of this new addition are: a brand new design. Incorporation of basic principles in boxes directly links the students to the main text;, and a large number of exercises with their solutions have been now added in each chapter. These exercises are set at appropriate places so that the students can test their command of a particular topic. New problems have been added at the end of each chapter. Chemical illustrations have been modified and developed for clarity and information. Generally the figures contain text as well, to decrease the need to refer back and forth to the text and for better understanding.

Inorganic Stereochemistry

Inorganic Stereochemistry Book Author : D. L. Kepert Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media Release : 2012-12-06 ISBN : 3642680461 Language : En

Book Description :

Molecular stereochemistry is a fundamental aspect of all areas of chemistry. It is especially important in inorganic chemistry where the coordination numbers are variable and occasionally quite high. The present book evolved naturally from a series of articles written by Professor Kepert for Progre88 in Inorganic Ohemi8try, elucida ting aspects of the stereochemistry of inorganic compounds of co ordination numbers 4-12. In the present volume, Professor Kepert has added new sections and synthesized these individual chapters into a unified treatment, updating his references when necessary to the most recent contributions in the literature, and inter weaving the various themes as deemed appropriate. The result is a major contribution, describing the stereochemistry of coordi nation compounds having both unidentate and multidentate ligands. The viability of the repulsion approach to stereochemistry is tested to the limit in this treatise and shown to be an extremely good way of rationalizing a diverse body of data.

Principles and Applications of Stereochemistry

Principles and Applications of Stereochemistry Book Author : Michael North Publisher : Routledge Release : 2017-10-19 ISBN : 1351422057 Language : En

Book Description :

A thorough understanding of stereochemistry is essential for the comprehension of almost all aspects of modern organic chemistry. It is also of great significance in many biochemical and medicinal disciplines, since the stereoisomers of a compound can have dramatically different biological properties. This text explains how the different properties of stereoisomers of a compound arise, and what processes can be used to prepare and analyze stereoisomerically pure compounds. It also presents prominent coverage of the stereochemistry of inorganic and organometallic compounds, which is likely to increase in importance, as these compounds are used as symmetric catalysts in asymmetric synthesis. Modern stereochemical terminology is used throughout, although reference is also made to older terms which are still widely used. A set of problems at the end of each chapter aims to further the reader's understanding of how the content can be applied. The book is designed mainly as a textbook for undergraduate students and as a reference source for more advanced levels, but is also intended for academic and professional organic chemists.

Mathematical Stereochemistry

Mathematical Stereochemistry Book Author : Shinsaku Fujita Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG Release : 2015-08-17 ISBN : 3110386372 Language : En

Book Description :

Mathematical Stereochemistry uses both chemistry and mathematics to present a challenge towards the current theoretical foundations of modern stereochemistry, that up to now suffered from the lack of mathematical formulations and minimal compability with chemoinformatics. The author develops novel interdisciplinary approaches to group theory (Fujita’s unit-subduced-cycle-index, USCI) and his proligand method before focussing on stereoisograms as a main theme. The concept of RS-stereoisomers functions as a rational theoretical foundation for remedying conceptual faults and misleading terminology caused by conventional application of the theories of van’t Hoff and Le Bel. This book indicates that classic descriptions on organic and stereochemistry in textbooks should be thoroughly revised in conceptionally deeper levels. The proposed intermediate concept causes a paradigm shift leading to the reconstruction of modern stereochemistry on the basis of mathematical formulations. •Provides a new theoretical framework for the reorganization of mathematical stereochemistry. •Covers point-groups and permutation symmetry and exemplifies the concepts using organic molecules and inorganic complexes. •Theoretical foundations of modern stereochemistry for chemistry students and researchers, as well as mathematicians interested in chemical application of mathematics. Shinsaku Fujita has been Professor of Information Chemistry and Materials Technology at the Kyoto Institute of Technology from 1997-2007; before starting the Shonan Institute of Chemoinformatics and Mathematical Chemistry as a private laboratory.

Chemical Structure Spatial Arrangement

Chemical Structure Spatial Arrangement Book Author : Peter J. Ramberg Publisher : Routledge Release : 2017-05-15 ISBN : 1351952455 Language : En

Book Description :

Offering a comprehensive narrative of the early history of stereochemistry, Dr Ramberg explores the reasons for and the consequences of the fundamental change in the meaning of chemical formulas with the emergence of stereochemistry during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. As yet relatively unexplored by historians, the development of stereochemistry - the study of the three-dimensional properties of molecules - provides a superb case study for exploring the meaning and purpose of chemical formulas, as it entailed a significant change in the meaning of chemical formulas from the purely chemical conception of 'structure' to the physico-chemical conception of molecules provided by the tetrahedral carbon atom. This study is the first to treat the emergence of the unique visual language of organic chemistry between 1830 and 1874 to place in context the near simultaneous proposal of the tetrahedral carbon atom by J.H. van 't Hoff and J.A. Le Bel in 1874. Dr Ramberg then examines the research programs in stereochemistry by Johannes Wislicenus, Arthur Hantzsch, Victor Meyer, Carl Bischoff, Emil Fischer and Alfred Werner, showing how the emergence of stereochemistry was a logical continuation of established research traditions in chemistry. In so doing, he also illustrates the novel and controversial characteristics of stereochemical ideas, especially the unprecedented use of mechanistic and dynamic principles in chemical explanation.
